The only reason Brad and I are doing this publicly and in blog form is to hear from other voices in this old debate. Please do feel completely free to add your comments. And, I'll go one further, if you wish to join us for a short time as a guest author, let us know and we'll discuss.
The more comments the better. This debate only works when it's large and active.
So, it feels like we're getting off to a bumpy start here with this. What's going on in the comments section of this post is very interesting and good stuff. But, I think Brad and I need a little more direction.
Here's what I suggest:
Sorry, it's been a few days. I'm so glad some of you have already jumped on board and are contributing to the conversation. Reminder for my Christian brothers and sisters: Jeff is my friend. He's not afraid of a good intellectual fight, but in the midst of it, treat him well and with respect.
Now, Jeff has given a bit of his context. I should give mine,
To begin with I think it might be helpful to understand the
context of this conversation. Jeff and I went to college together and I later
followed him to graduate school. In those days we were studying theatre. Today,
both of us are in fields very different from our educational training. Jeff has
moved to the tech industry and I am in full-time Christian ministry. We are
married have kids, homes, and minivans (Well, I do. I don’t know about Jeff.).
